1621: An Abundant Harvest, a Fragile Pact
« Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors. »— Edward Winslow, Mourt's Relation
In the spring of 1621, the Plymouth colony was on the brink of annihilation. It was then that Squanto, a member of the Patuxet tribe and interpreter for Chief Massasoit, appeared. Having learned English after being captured and taken to Europe, then repatriated, Squanto became an essential intermediary. He taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate local crops, fish for eels, and identify edible plants.
Thanks to this vital knowledge and a peace treaty signed with Massasoit in March 1621, the colony prospered. In the autumn of 1621, an abundant harvest allowed for a three-day feast, bringing together the 53 surviving Pilgrims and about 90 Wampanoag warriors, including Massasoit. This shared meal, celebrating survival and alliance, is now commemorated as the first Thanksgiving, a symbol of gratitude and coexistence.
