**Nizhny Novgorod: The Silent Echo of Gorky**
« It is impossible to separate peace and human rights. These are intrinsically linked concepts. »— Andrei Sakharov, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
Andrei Sakharov, father of the Soviet H-bomb, became a major dissident figure in the USSR from the 1960s. His criticisms of nuclear tests, political repression, and his advocacy for human rights earned him international recognition, culminating in the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. However, his opposition to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was the final straw. On January 22, 1980, he was arrested and exiled without trial to the closed city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), cutting off all contact with the outside world.
For six years, from 1980 to 1986, Sakharov lived under constant surveillance, enduring searches and psychological pressure. Despite this forced isolation, he continued to write, send appeals and communiqués by indirect means, and protest through hunger strikes to defend his principles. His exile in Gorky became a global symbol of the struggle for freedom of thought against state oppression, until his triumphant return to Moscow in December 1986, at the dawn of perestroika.
