On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became a global hero as the first man to travel into space. However, his return to Earth was shrouded in mystery. According to the rules of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), a spaceflight record required the pilot to land inside their spacecraft. Gagarin, after ejecting at 7 km altitude, landed by parachute near the village of Smelovka, in the Saratov Oblast, miles from his capsule.
