Standing 49 meters tall, the Pont du Gard is the tallest Roman aqueduct ever built. For five centuries, it carried water from the springs of Uzès to the fountains of Nîmes, covering 50 kilometers with a gradient of just 34 centimeters per kilometer. In the surrounding hills, Protestant Camisards hid for decades, resisting the Sun King's dragoons.
When you look up at the three tiers of arches of the Pont du Gard, you grasp Rome's boundless ambition. This aqueduct, built without mortar, has stood for two millennia thanks solely to the perfection of its stonework. Six-ton blocks fit together with millimetric precision. Around it, the fragrant garrigue hides the paths Roman quarrymen once used — and, centuries later, the Camisards fleeing religious persecution.
« "He who has not seen the Pont du Gard has seen nothing." »— — Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Confessions, 1782
Around 50 AD, Roman engineers undertook a colossal project: building a 50-kilometer aqueduct to carry water from the springs of Eure, near Uzès, to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). The challenge was immense: the total gradient was only 17 meters over the entire route, or 34 centimeters per kilometer. To cross the Gardon valley, they erected the Pont du Gard — three tiers of superimposed arches, 49 meters high, 275 meters long.
The aqueduct operated for five centuries, supplying the baths, fountains, and castellum divisorium of Nîmes — a distribution basin still visible today. Every day, 40,000 cubic meters of water flowed through the channel, entirely by gravity. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the aqueduct fell into disuse, but the Pont du Gard was so impressive that local lords preserved it, even converting it into a road bridge in the Middle Ages.
In the surrounding garrigue, another chapter of history played out in the early 18th century. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the Protestants of the Cévennes rose up: the Camisards. For two years, these peasants armed with scythes and pitchforks held off Louis XIV's armies, hiding in the caves and scrubland of the garrigue. Their resistance has become a symbol of freedom of conscience.
