Phimai — Uncover the Sacred Alignment

Phimai, located in the present-day Nakhon Ratchasima province, was a major center of Khmer civilization in Thailand, predating the construction of Angkor Wat by several decades. Established at the confluence of the Mun and Chakkarat rivers, it became a strategic commercial and religious crossroads. Prasat Hin Phimai, its main temple, is one of the most important Mahayana Buddhist sanctuaries of the Khmer Empire, built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, under the reigns of rulers like Jayavarman VI and Dharanindravarman I. Its architecture is remarkable for its Indian influences and symmetry, but especially for a unique orientation that distinguishes it from other Khmer temples, facing not east, but southeast, towards Angkor Thom.

The choice of its orientation and the richness of its bas-reliefs reveal a profound knowledge of astronomy and cosmology. Researchers believe that Phimai was not only a place of worship but also a center for celestial observation and a symbolic connection point with the imperial capital. Its role declined after the 13th century with the rise of Theravada Buddhism, but its architectural and spiritual heritage remains an essential testimony to Khmer grandeur in the Isan region.
