Auckland Harbour — Rainbow Warrior Conspiracy

🎭Your Mission

You are a lead Auckland police detective, July 11, 1985, assigned to the Rainbow Warrior bombing.

Greenpeace's flagship Rainbow Warrior lies sunken at Marsden Wharf in Auckland Harbour

Auckland 1985: The Rainbow Warrior Sabotage

« “It is simply inconceivable that a friendly state could act in this way against a small Pacific nation.” »
David Lange, Prime Minister of New Zealand, 1985

Operation Satanique and its Repercussions

In the 1970s and 1980s, France conducted nuclear tests in the South Pacific, particularly at Mururoa. This policy was strongly opposed by Pacific nations, Australia, New Zealand, and environmental organizations such as Greenpeace. The Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace's vessel, was preparing to launch a protest campaign against these tests. The French government, under President François Mitterrand, then authorized a secret operation by the DGSE (Directorate-General for External Security) to sabotage the ship and prevent it from leaving Auckland.

The operation, codenamed 'Satanique,' was carried out by French agents who placed two limpet mines on the ship's hull on July 10, 1985. The explosion claimed the life of Fernando Pereira, a Portuguese photographer. The New Zealand investigation quickly led to the arrest of two agents, Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur, who were convicted. This international scandal caused a major diplomatic crisis between France and New Zealand, strengthening the latter's anti-nuclear stance and leaving a deep scar in the history of international relations.

1971
Founding of Greenpeace in Vancouver, with the mission to fight against nuclear testing.
1985
Rainbow Warrior bombing in Auckland harbour, resulting in the death of Fernando Pereira.
1990
France is condemned by an international arbitration tribunal for the Rainbow Warrior attack.

Pre-register or contact us — we'll email you as soon as your city is live.

Q07What is augmented reality exactly?

Point your phone at the façade: a historical character appears full-screen and speaks to you in your language. At the puzzle climax, golden letters magically write themselves on the real wall — that's your answer. After each puzzle solved, a treasure chest floats in front of you. Seeing is believing.
