Cluny — the abbey that rivaled Rome
Founded in 910 by Duke William I of Aquitaine, the Abbey of Cluny enjoyed from the start a unique privilege: it answered only to the Pope, free from any lordly or episcopal power. This freedom allowed it to develop a monastic reform that transformed Europe.
Under abbots Odo, Odilo, Hugh of Semur, and Peter the Venerable, Cluny built a network of 1,500 monasteries. The third abbey church, begun in 1088, became the largest in Christendom. Its transept could contain the entire Cathedral of Autun.
The French Revolution sealed Cluny's fate. The abbey was sold as national property and dismantled stone by stone. Only a tenth remains today. But the monks, sensing the coming disaster, had hidden their most precious documents. Some were found in the 19th century. Others still await discovery.
