Fort Worth Stockyards — Spectral Belle's Curse

🎭Your Mission

You are a seasoned Fort Worth Sheriff's Deputy, tasked with a peculiar case in 1898.

Your mission: unravel the curse of Spectral Belle, a wandering soul tied to the rise

Delve into the myth of Spectral Belle, the ghost cowgirl haunting the cobblestone streets of Fort Worth, where the cattle trade shaped Texas history.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest for Spectral Belle begins in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, a vast 98-acre area designated as a National Historic District in 1976. This was the nerve center of Fort Worth's cattle trade since the late 19th century. Here, you follow in the footsteps of the early merchants and ranchers who made Fort Worth the quintessential 'Cowtown.' The daily Cattle Drives, held since 1999, echo the hustle of the 1920s, when thousands of cattle passed through, under the watchful eye of sheriffs like John Francis 'Jack' Cureton, a founder of the Stockyards.

Continue your investigation to the Livestock Exchange Building, constructed in 1902-1903. Its red brick neo-classical architecture and 100-foot clock tower dominate the landscape, attesting to its importance. This 20,000 sq ft building was the historic headquarters of the Fort Worth Stock Yards Company until 1970 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was within these walls that Robert L. Downing, a key Stockyards real estate developer, likely strategized to develop what became a National Historic District, shaping Texas's heritage.

The Cowtown Coliseum, opened in 1918 and renovated in 2000, is a landmark in the history of the Wild West that you explore. Originally known as the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum, it hosted the world's first professional indoor rodeo during the Fort Worth Stock Show in 1918. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, this coliseum, capable of seating 4,000 to 12,000 spectators, even served as a filming location for Westerns like 'Giant' (1956). These walls have seen thousands of cowboys and legends, and perhaps Spectral Belle herself.

Your journey then leads you to Stockyards Station, a commercial complex restored in 1993 on the former site of the cattle pens. Located at 2501 Rodeo Plaza, less than 0.5 km from the main entrance, this station houses over 50 shops and restaurants in buildings dating from 1889-1902. At its peak in 1920, it saw a daily intake of 8,000 head of cattle. It is here, on Exchange Avenue, the main paved thoroughfare of the Stockyards, about 1 km long, that 1,300-pound Longhorns still participate in Cattle Drives, recreating auction scenes that sold up to 100,000 head per week.

As you complete your investigation in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, you have walked through the living history of Fort Worth, 'Where the West Begins.' You have followed in the footsteps of Greenlefe Fisk, the civil engineer who designed this district, and witnessed Texas's heritage come alive. This outdoor escape game will have allowed you to understand why this place is a Texas Historical Landmark, a National Historic District, and a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The legend of Spectral Belle is now etched in your memory, an echo of the souls who shaped this iconic city.
