Fort Worth — Decode the Barrow Gang's Final Days

🎭Your Mission

You are Frank Hamer, the Texas Ranger assigned in 1932 to track down the notorious Barrow Gang.

Your mission begins at the majestic Tarrant County Courthouse, the starting point of

Dive into the heart of Fort Worth, Texas, following the still-burning trail of America's most famous outlaws: Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.

« Fort Worth — The City of the West »
Inscription on the Pioneer Tower, 1921

The story that haunts this land

Your investigation begins at the Tarrant County Courthouse, a Romanesque Revival style edifice built between 1893 and 1895 by Gunn & Gould. With its 91-meter central tower, it was one of the tallest municipal buildings in Texas at the time. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, this monument has witnessed major Tarrant County trials since 1895. Its 2001-2004 restoration preserved its original German stained-glass windows, silent witnesses to the judgments that shaped Fort Worth's history. It is here that criminal legends like the Barrow Gang may have been discussed, even in their absence, in the halls of justice.

Continue to the Fort Worth National Bank Building, an 18-story, 70-meter skyscraper, erected in 1920 by Sanguinet & Staats in a Second Renaissance Revival style. This monument, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, is infamous for the failed Barrow Gang robbery on April 25, 1932. Now known as The Tower, with its iconic clock installed in 1921, it represents a key point in your investigation into Texas heritage. The walls of this edifice might still whisper the echoes of Bonnie and Clyde's audacious attempt.

A short walk away, Sundance Square plunges you into the hustle and bustle of 1930s Fort Worth. This historic district, developed by Trammell Crow in the 1970s and renovated in 2014, is a 14-block pedestrian center around Main Street, listed on the NRHP in 1980. It houses 35 historic buildings dating from 1880 to 1940. Just 500 meters from the Tarrant County Courthouse, this historic district was surely the scene of discreet meetings or quick getaways for gang members. Its alleys and squares have hosted hundreds of annual events, including the free Sundance Square Live concerts since 1980, but also, more discreetly, the underworld of the era.

Your route then takes you to the Hotel Texas, opened in 1921 in a Renaissance Revival style, designed by Sanguinet, Staats & Hedrick. It was not Bonnie and Clyde who left their mark on this hotel, but another major historical event: President John F. Kennedy's last night, on November 21, 1963. The presidential suite, restored with period Kennedy furniture and visible to the public, offers a striking contrast to the outlaws you are tracking. Listed on the National Register in 2009, this hotel, 800 meters from the starting point, is a landmark in Fort Worth's history, bearing witness to the evolution of Texas and the figures who passed through it.

Finally, the Pioneer Tower, erected in 1921 at the Flatiron Building, 32 meters high and bearing the inscription 'Fort Worth — The City of the West', is a powerful symbol of Texas pioneers. Restored in 1986 and visible from Sundance Square, it is an integral part of the historic downtown district, listed on the NRHP in 1978. It embodies the spirit of a city where the Wild West met modernity, a fertile ground for figures like Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. By completing your Fort Worth circuit, you will have unraveled the threads of a bygone era, that of outlaws and Rangers, and understood how Texas's criminal past is embedded in its architecture and memory.
