Cortés' encounter with sacred cacao
On March 12, 1519, Hernán Cortés landed at Potonchán (present-day Frontera) with 600 men. After defeating the Chontal Maya at the Battle of Centla, he received a peace tribute including twenty female slaves and thousands of cacao beans. The most famous of these women, Malintzin (La Malinche), became his interpreter and revealed the secrets of Mesoamerican trade to him.
Cortés discovered that cacao beans served as universal currency: a turkey was worth 200 beans, a tomato one bean, an avocado three beans. Even more fascinating, Mayan priests prepared a sacred drink called xocolatl with these seeds, mixed with spices and honey. This drink, reserved for nobles and warriors, was supposed to confer strength and courage. Cortés quickly understood the strategic value of controlling this 'currency that grows on trees'.
