From Fishing Village to Oil Hub

Hurghada, unlike many Egyptian cities, has a relatively short official history, founded in 1905 as a settlement of fishermen's huts on the Red Sea coast. The city's name is derived from the "garkad" shrub, or saltpeter, which grew in abundance in the area during the early 20th century. For a long time, Hurghada remained largely unknown, not even appearing on world maps. This began to change in the early 1900s when British petroleum exploration teams arrived, drawn by the region's geological potential. They established the first official buildings, marking Hurghada's transition from a simple fishing outpost to a recognized settlement. In 1913, oil deposits were discovered nearby, leading to the beginning of commercial oil production and transforming the fishing village into an industrial hub. This attracted foreign specialists and workers, necessitating the construction of roads, housing, and other infrastructure.

The Rise of a Tourism Capital

Until the 1980s, Hurghada's economy primarily relied on fishing and oil production, maintaining a somewhat isolated existence from the major settlements in the Nile Valley. The culture was a blend of local fishermen's traditions and the Bedouin tribes who roamed the Arabian Desert. A significant turning point in Hurghada's history came in the mid-20th century with the discovery of the Red Sea's underwater life by marine explorers and scientists. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Egyptian government, recognizing the potential, launched a large-scale program to develop the Red Sea coast for tourism. This led to a tourism boom, with foreign investment pouring into the region during the 1990s and 2000s. The coastline was transformed into a landscape of resorts, hotels, and entertainment complexes, accompanied by the expansion of infrastructure, including a modern international airport and improved road networks. Today, Hurghada stretches for nearly 40 kilometers along the Red Sea coast, a testament to its rapid growth into a major international resort city.

• —El-Dahar Square (Downtown Hurghada) — This is the oldest part of Hurghada. It shows the city's traditional Egyptian character with its planning, narrow streets, and dense buildings. You will find souks, local coffee shops, and eateries here.
• —Hurghada Marina Boulevard — A modern waterfront with yacht parking, this area opened in 2008. It has restaurants and shops.
• —Al Mina Mosque — Completed in 2012, this mosque has white marble, two 40-meter high minarets, and a 25-meter high dome. Its exterior has traditional oriental ornaments and carvings. The interior has colorful halls with chandeliers and arches.
• —Hurghada Fish Market — Located in El Dahar, this market connects to Hurghada's fishing village origins. Visiting in the morning allows you to see the day's fresh catch.
• —St. Shenouda Coptic Orthodox Cathedral — This is a religious site for the Coptic Christian community in Hurghada.
• —Mamsha Promenade — Also known as Village Road, this promenade has many of Hurghada's newer hotels, restaurants, and shops. It is a central area for tourists.
• —Giftun Islands Ferry Terminal — This is the departure point for boat trips to the Giftun Islands, known for their clear waters and opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

Hurghada is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is between October and April. During these months, temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C, suitable for outdoor activities. The sea is warm and clear for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. December is busy with European winter-sun seekers, while January and February are quieter and more affordable. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer warm weather and comfortable sea temperatures, with fewer crowds than the summer peak.

Avoid visiting in the summer months, from June to August, as temperatures can exceed 35°C, making daytime activities less comfortable.

Hurghada International Airport (HRG) is approximately 5 km southwest of the downtown El Dahar district, and about 8.7 km from the Hurghada Marina. A taxi ride to the city center takes 15-20 minutes. Pre-booking an airport transfer is recommended.

Within Hurghada, the white microbus (minibus) is the most common and economical public transportation. These minibuses operate on regular routes, without fixed timetables, and depart once enough passengers have boarded. Fares are typically between 5 and 15 Egyptian Pounds for most city journeys. Taxis are also available, recognizable by their orange and blue colors. Agree on the fare and currency with the driver before starting your journey. Ride-hailing apps like Uber, Careem, and inDrive are also available. Walking is suitable for short distances in tourist areas, but pavements can be uneven and traffic can be active.
