From Chorotega Roots to Colonial Crossroads

Santa Cruz, in the Guanacaste province, has a history that predates European arrival. The region was settled by the Chorotega people, an Indigenous civilization known for their agriculture, pottery, and organized communities. They cultivated crops like maize, beans, squash, cotton, and cacao, and crafted stone and clay ritual objects. Their influence remains in local food, crafts, and celebrations.

The Spanish colonial period saw Santa Cruz develop as an agricultural and cattle-ranching center. Doña Bernabela Ramos Sequeira was a figure in its early development. In 1814, she donated four plots of land to establish a chapel dedicated to Santo Cristo de Esquipulas. This chapel became a focal point for the community and helped solidify the town's name.

The Annexation and Rise of a Folkloric City

The political landscape of the region changed on July 25, 1824, when the towns of Nicoya and Santa Cruz voted to annex themselves to Costa Rica. This decision is celebrated annually as a national holiday. This act broadened Costa Rica's frontiers and added Guanacaste's identity to its cultural mosaic. Santa Cruz was established as the third canton of Guanacaste on December 7, 1848, and was elevated to Villa (town) status on November 4, 1862. It was named Diría in 1916 before its original name, Santa Cruz, was restored the following year.

Santa Cruz has maintained a connection to its traditions, earning it the title of "National Folklore City of Costa Rica." This designation, from 1974, reflects the town's preservation of traditional music, dances, food, and customs. This is evident during the Fiestas Típicas Nacionales held every January.

The dry season, from mid-December to April, is the best time to visit Santa Cruz. During these months, expect warm, dry, and sunny days, with average daytime highs around 33°C (91°F). January is active, as the city celebrates its patron saint, Santo Cristo de Esquipulas, with dances, parties, and traditional foods.

Avoid the peak of the wet season, typically September and October, when rainfall is highest and skies are often overcast. The wet season, from May to November, brings lush landscapes, but also more frequent afternoon downpours and higher humidity.

Santa Cruz is in the Nicoya Peninsula, about a 30-minute drive from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) near Liberia. The town center is walkable, allowing exploration of the main sights on foot. For getting around the wider canton, local buses and taxis are available. Renting a car offers flexibility for visiting nearby beaches and attractions.

Santa Cruz has local markets. The Municipal Market offers fresh produce and local crafts. The town maintains a sabanero (cowboy) tradition, and horse parades or rodeos may occur during festivals. Many businesses may observe a siesta during the hottest part of the afternoon.
