From Chorotega Heart to Colonial Outpost

Before the Spanish arrival, the Nicoya Peninsula was a cultural center for the Chorotega people, an indigenous civilization believed to have migrated from Mesoamerica around 800 AD. They established organized communities with agricultural practices, cultivating corn, beans, cacao, and squash. The Chorotega were known for their craftsmanship, particularly their ceramics and textiles, traded across Central America. Archaeological discoveries and traditional pottery styles reflect their lasting influence. When Spanish explorer Gil González Dávila arrived in 1522, he found indigenous communities. Nicoya, then called the Kingdom of Nicoya, was the most important chiefdom on the North Pacific coast of what is now Costa Rica. The Spanish conquest brought changes, including the imposition of European customs, language, and religion. The indigenous population decreased by an estimated 80% between 1529 and 1557 due to warfare, disease, and forced labor.

The Annexation of the Partido de Nicoya

For centuries, the Nicoya region's administrative status shifted between dependence on Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and periods of autonomy. After Central America gained independence from Spain in 1821, the Nicoya Peninsula, then known as the Partido de Nicoya, faced a decision: to align with Nicaragua or Costa Rica. On July 25, 1824, an open town council (cabildo abierto) was held in Nicoya. The residents of Nicoya and Santa Cruz voted to join Costa Rica. This decision was driven by economic ties, geographical proximity, and social connections. This choice is commemorated with the slogan "De la Patria por nuestra voluntad" (Of the Homeland by our will). While Nicoya and Santa Cruz opted for Costa Rica, the town of Guanacaste (now Liberia) initially declined, later joining Costa Rica in 1825 by a law issued by the Federal Republic of Central America. This event, referred to as the Annexation of the Partido de Nicoya, expanded Costa Rica's national territory and cultural identity.

• —Calle Real (Old Main Street) — This historic street shows Nicoya in earlier times. Many of the older houses were built using traditional Creole techniques with hard wood and few nails, reflecting past architectural styles.

The best time to visit Nicoya for outdoor activities is from early December to mid-March, with a peak in the first week of January. During these months, expect sunshine and little rain, with sea temperatures around 27°C. This dry season is also the high season for tourism, so beaches can be busier, especially on weekends and during Easter. The "Green Season," from May to August, has rains, pleasant temperatures, and green landscapes, with rain typically occurring in the late afternoon or at night. Avoid October, as it is typically the rainiest month.

Nicoya is approximately 210 km from San José. The cheapest way to get there is by bus, which takes around 4 hours and 27 minutes and costs $9-$11. Direct buses depart hourly from Central Autobusera Inteligente in San José to Terminal Nicoya. Shuttles are a faster option, taking about 2 hours, but cost more, ranging from $230-$280. Shared shuttles from Papagayo to Nicoya take about 1.5 hours and cost around $50 per person. Once in Nicoya, the town center is walkable. For getting around the broader Nicoya Peninsula, a 4x4 vehicle is often necessary, especially during the wet season, as some roads, like Route 160 along the coast, involve river crossings. Local buses connect Nicoya to surrounding areas like Nosara and Sámara.
