The "Key City" and its Economic Shift

Port Townsend was founded on April 24, 1851. Early speculation projected it to become the largest harbor on the West Coast. Its location at Admiralty Inlet, the entrance to Puget Sound, led to its designation as a U.S. Port of Entry in 1853-1854. All vessels entering Puget Sound were required to stop for inspection and pay duty, which created a maritime economy and the nickname "Key City."

By the 1880s, Port Townsend was a seaport, attracting investment. Victorian homes and businesses were built, reflecting the city's growth. The city's future as a major hub depended on the transcontinental railroad extending to Port Townsend. When the Northern Pacific Railroad selected Tacoma as its terminus in the 1890s, Port Townsend's economy declined. Many people left, and buildings were abandoned, preserving much of its late 19th-century architecture for nearly a century.

From Military Post to State Park

While the city's economic boom ended, its location remained important for military defense. Fort Worden, built between 1898 and 1920, was part of the "triangle of fire" coastal defense system, designed to protect Puget Sound from naval attacks. Named after U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden, the fort was an active U.S. Army base from 1902 until 1953. After its military closure, the site served as a juvenile detention facility before becoming Fort Worden State Park in 1973. Today, the 434-acre park combines its military history with natural areas, offering visitors a view of its past through artillery emplacements and officers' quarters.

• —Water Street Buildings — The main streets along the waterfront have substantial buildings from the town's boom days, showing the architectural ambition of a city that once expected to be a major port.
• —Old Bell Tower — Dating to 1890, this bell tower is a reminder of the city's early civic infrastructure during its period of rapid growth.
• —Franklin Street Viewpoint — From this elevated position, views extend to Port Townsend Bay, Admiralty Inlet, and the Olympic Mountains.

The best time to visit Port Townsend for outdoor activities is from mid-July to late August. The weather is warm and dry, with average highs around 73°F (23°C) and lows around 55°F (13°C). Rain is rare in July. This period includes festivals like Jazz Port Townsend and the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes at Fort Worden.

Early September is also an option, particularly for the Wooden Boat Festival. Spring (mid-April to mid-June) brings flowers and the Victorian Heritage Festival. Winter is the quietest season, with cooler temperatures and more rain. Avoid November, which is the wettest month with an average of 16.4 days of precipitation.

Port Townsend is a two-hour drive from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). It can be reached by ferry from the Seattle metro area or by driving north from Portland on Highway 101. From Vancouver, Canada, drive to Whidbey Island and take a ferry directly to Port Townsend.

The downtown area is walkable. For longer distances or to reach Fort Worden, Jefferson Transit provides public transportation. Consider parking at the Haines Place Park-N-Ride lot and using local buses and downtown shuttles. On-street parking downtown is limited to two hours, with stricter enforcement during tourist seasons. Private paid lots are also available; check signage. The Port Townsend Farmers Market operates on Saturdays from April to December on Tyler Street in Uptown, and a smaller market on Sundays at Chimacum Corner from June to October.
