Early Mining and City Formation

Joplin's origins began with the discovery of lead in the Joplin Creek Valley before the Civil War. Mining efforts were interrupted by the conflict, but a significant lead strike in 1870 drew miners, leading to the rapid growth of mining camps. John C. Cox filed a plan for a city on the east side of the valley, naming it Joplin City after Reverend Harris G. Joplin, an early settler and founder of the region's first Methodist congregation in 1839.

Patrick Murphy established Murphysburg on the opposite side of the valley in 1871. The early days included frontier lawlessness, sometimes called the "Reign of Terror," due to a lack of formal law enforcement, which allowed gambling, saloons, and a red-light district. After an initial, illegal merger attempt, Joplin and Murphysburg consolidated on March 23, 1873, officially becoming the City of Joplin. While lead initially established Joplin, zinc, often called "jack," fueled its growth. By the turn of the 20th century, Joplin had become a regional center, the lead and zinc mining capital of the world, with its Main Street active with hotels, bars, and homes.

Route 66 and Economic Diversification

Joplin's mining prosperity continued through World War I, as minerals were important for the war effort. After the war ended in 1918, the mining industry declined due to lower ore prices and the discovery of richer deposits elsewhere. By World War II, most mines had closed. In 1926, U.S. Route 66 was established, passing through Joplin and making it a stop along the "Mother Road." This era brought new travelers to the city, even as its population growth stabilized after the mining boom. The city has since diversified, with a focus on healthcare and education, while maintaining its mining and Route 66 history.

• —Joplin History & Mineral Museum — This museum details the city's mining past, with a replica mine shaft entrance and displays of lead and zinc ores, mining tools, and other minerals. It also includes exhibits on Historic Route 66 and the figures of Bonnie and Clyde.
• —Route 66 Mural Park — Located on Main Street, this park displays two large tile murals, "Cruisin' into Joplin" and "The American Ribbon," depicting the highway's history. A replica 1964 red Corvette is available for photos.
• —Murphysburg Historic District — A walking tour through this district shows 19th-century homes, providing an example of Joplin's architectural past.
• —Grand Falls — This is Missouri's largest continuously flowing natural waterfall, measuring 12 feet high and 163 feet wide, on Shoal Creek. It is a location for photography and viewing nature.
• —Joplin City Hall — Inside, view Thomas Hart Benton's mural, "Joplin at the Turn of the Century," which shows various social groups on Main Street in the late 1800s.
• —Schifferdecker Park Gazebo — This park contains the Joplin Museum Complex, which includes the Joplin History & Mineral Museum. 3D street paintings celebrating Route 66 are also present here.

The best times to visit Joplin for outdoor activities are from mid-May to early October, with a peak in early September, when the weather is mild. Spring (April to June) offers mild weather and festivals like the Carver Day Celebration. Fall (September to November) brings cool temperatures and fewer crowds. Summers (June to September) are hot and humid, with average daily highs above 82°F (28°C), reaching around 90°F (32°C) in July. May is typically the wettest month. Winters (late November to late February) are cold, with average daily highs below 54°F (12°C) and lows around 27°F (-3°C) in January, and some snowfall. Avoid visiting in January and February if cold weather and cloudy skies are a concern.

Joplin is served by the Joplin Regional Airport (JLN), located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north of the city center. Interstate 44 provides access for those arriving by car. The city is easy to navigate by car. Downtown Joplin, also known as the Sunshine Lamp District, is walkable, with wide pavements and street parking and public lots available. Public transportation options are limited, so renting a car is often recommended for exploring beyond the immediate downtown area and for trips along historic Route 66. The cost of living in Joplin is generally lower than the national average, including housing, groceries, and transportation.
