From Kalapuya Lands to Pioneer Settlement

Eugene's story begins with the Kalapuya people, who inhabited the Willamette Valley for centuries. They lived a nomadic lifestyle, moving with the seasons as various crops ripened. The area that is now Alton Baker Park was originally Kalapuya land.

The city was founded in 1846 by Eugene Skinner, who built a cabin on what is now Skinner Butte. Skinner became a postmaster in 1849, the same year Oregon officially became a U.S. territory. He donated a significant portion of his land for county and city buildings. Eugene was officially incorporated as a city in 1862.

Timber, Academia, and Counterculture

Eugene grew throughout the 20th century. The city's development was shaped by the University of Oregon, established in 1872 after the community raised initial funding and local resident J.H.D. Henderson donated the hilltop land for the campus. The university remains a central part of the city.

The timber industry was a major economic driver for decades, though a downturn in the early 1980s led to high unemployment. By 1985, the industry had recovered, and Eugene began attracting high-tech companies, earning it the moniker "Silicon Shire" by 2012.

Eugene also developed a reputation for its arts and counterculture scenes. The city's progressive spirit is evident in its commitment to free speech, as symbolized by places like Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza. Eugene is also known as "Track Town, USA" due to its association with track and field, and it is the birthplace of Nike, founded in 1964 by University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and his student Phil Knight.

It offers dining options, meeting spaces, and event venues. The "Fishbowl" dining facility was featured in the movie National Lampoon's Animal House.
• —Alton Baker Park — Eugene's largest developed park, spanning over 400 acres. It offers green space along the Willamette River. It features duck ponds, bike trails, a dog park, and the Cuthbert Amphitheater. The Whilamut Natural Area, within the park, preserves a natural landscape.
• —Eugene Saturday Market (Park Blocks) — This open-air crafts market, established in 1970, is the oldest continuously operating weekly open-air crafts market in the United States. It features local artisans, international food vendors, and live entertainment.
• —Kesey Square (Broadway Plaza) — A public square in downtown Eugene, named after author Ken Kesey. It is known for its public art and as a gathering spot.
• —Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza — This plaza is a public space dedicated to Senator Wayne Morse, emphasizing free speech and assembly.

The best time to visit Eugene for outdoor activities is from early July to late August. During these months, the weather is warm and dry, with average highs around 85°F (29°C) in August and minimal rainfall. This period is suitable for exploring parks, cycling, and attending outdoor festivals.

Fall, particularly September, offers pleasant weather with cooler temperatures and autumn foliage. This makes it suitable for wine tasting as vineyards enter harvest season. The Eugene Saturday Market continues its weekly run through mid-November.

Spring (March-May) is a transitional period with mild temperatures but rain. Wildflowers begin to bloom, and the Saturday Market opens in April. Winters (December-February) are cool and damp, with significant rainfall and occasional light snowfall. This is generally the least ideal time for outdoor exploration due to the wet weather.

Eugene Airport (EUG) serves the city, located about 10 miles northwest of downtown. Interstate 5 runs directly through Eugene, connecting it to other major cities.

Getting around Eugene is easy due to its emphasis on eco-friendly transportation. Many residents and visitors walk or bike, utilizing the city's network of paths and trails. Public transportation is available through the EMX bus system, which connects different neighborhoods.

For those driving, free parking is available in two city parking garages in downtown Eugene: The Overpark at Oak & Broadway and The Parcade between 7th and 8th Avenues on Willamette. Street parking is also an option, though it may be limited during peak hours.

The Eugene Saturday Market is open every Saturday from April through mid-November, from 10 AM to 4 PM, on the Park Blocks at 8th and Oak Street. The Lane County Farmers Market operates on Saturdays year-round, and also on Tuesdays from May to October, at the Farmers Market Pavilion across from the Park Blocks.
