The history of Claremore
Osage Settlement and Cherokee Territory
Claremore's origins are tied to an Osage Indian village established around 1802 by Chief Glahmo. He set up a fur trading post along the Verdigris River on a 25-acre mound, which became known as Clermont, a French term meaning "clear mountain." Chief Glahmo became known as Chief Clermont.
In April 1817, the Western Cherokees attacked the Osage in the Battle of Claremore Mound, about six miles north of present-day Claremore. After the Indian Removal Act of 1830, this area became part of Indian Territory and was designated for the Cherokee Nation. A settlement, primarily of Cherokee Indians, grew on Clermont Mound, with a general store, blacksmith shop, and a school.
