The Copper King's Vision

Anaconda, Montana, was founded in 1883 by Marcus Daly, one of Montana's "Copper Kings." Daly, an Irish immigrant who made his fortune in mining, established Anaconda as the site for a large smelter to process copper ore from his mines in Butte, about 28 miles away. He named the town after his Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The company became the world's largest copper smelter, supplying a quarter of the nation's copper by 1900. This mineral was crucial for the electrification of the United States.

A City Built on Industry and Ambition

Daly's plans for Anaconda extended beyond industry; he lobbied to make it the state capital when Montana was admitted to the Union in 1889. Helena won the bid in 1894, but the city's architecture, like the Anaconda City Hall completed in 1896, reflects this early aspiration. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company was a dominant force, employing generations of workers. It also owned a railroad to transport ore, mined its own coal, and cut its own timber. This industrial operation shaped Anaconda into a diverse community, attracting immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Slavic countries in its early decades, followed by Germans, Scandinavians, English, and African Americans, all seeking work at the smelter. The city's reliance on a single industry proved challenging; when the smelter closed in 1980, it led to job losses and environmental concerns. This prompted a Superfund cleanup and the transformation of parts of the industrial landscape, including the creation of the Old Works Golf Course.

• —Anaconda Smelter Stack State Park — This park offers a distant view of the Anaconda Smelter Stack, a brick chimney built in 1918. Standing 585 feet tall, it is the tallest surviving masonry structure in the world. Interpretive signs at the viewing site explain its history.
• —Anaconda City Hall — Completed in 1896, this Late Victorian-style building was designed by Collins W. Reber. It features local Anaconda pressed brick, granite, and copper trim, showing Romanesque arches, Gothic tracery, and a Chateauesque-style roof. It now houses the Copper Village Museum & Art Center and the Marcus Daly Historical Museum & Archives.
• —Hearst Free Library — A gift from Phoebe Hearst, this classical building opened on June 1, 1898. It features granite columns, arched windows, and a copper cornice. Hearst intended it as a cultural center, filling it with art.
• —Washoe Park — This municipal park offers green spaces and recreational opportunities. It is an area for a stroll or to relax outdoors.
• —Main Street (Historic Intersection) — Explore the downtown area, which features Victorian-era business blocks and early 20th-century façades. These structures show Anaconda's past commercial life.
• —Old Works Golf Course — Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this 18-hole golf course was built on a former Superfund site, showing environmental reclamation and recreation.

The best time to visit Anaconda for warm-weather activities is from early July to mid-August. Temperatures are comfortable, with average highs in July reaching around 78-81°F (24-27°C) and lows around 45°F (7°C). Skies are clear, and rainfall is minimal, ensuring conditions for outdoor exploration. Late June and September also offer good weather with fewer crowds.

Avoid visiting in December and January if you prefer to avoid cold, as these are the coldest months, with average lows around 11-12°F (-11°C) and highs around 32-37°F (0-3°C). Heavy snow and icy roads are likely during winter.

Anaconda is accessible by car via Scenic Highway 1, which connects to I-90. The nearest airport is Bert Mooney Airport (BTM) in Butte, approximately 28 miles away, offering direct flights to Salt Lake City. Missoula International Airport (MSO) is about 77 miles away, and Helena Regional Airport (HLN) is about 57 miles away. From Butte, you can take a taxi to Anaconda. Public transportation within Anaconda is limited, but Uber is available. Renting a car is recommended for exploring beyond the city.

Street parking is generally available in downtown Anaconda. The Anaconda Community Market takes place on the 100 Block of Main Street every Thursday from 4 PM to 7 PM, from July through early September, offering local produce, handmade goods, and live music.
