The history of Jaffna
Ancient Kingdoms and Colonial Rule
Jaffna served as the capital of the Jaffna Kingdom, a Tamil kingdom that existed for centuries. In the 15th century, Nallur, a suburb of Jaffna, became the royal capital. This was a fortified city with palaces and a commercial district around the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil.
European colonial powers reshaped Jaffna. The Portuguese conquered the Jaffna Kingdom in 1619, destroying many Hindu temples, including an earlier version of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in 1624. They built churches in their place. The Dutch took control in 1658, and their influence is visible in the architecture of Jaffna Fort, which they expanded after the Portuguese built it in 1619.
