From Phoenician Port to Roman Hub

The island of Sant'Antioco, known as Sulky (or Sulci) in ancient times, has a history extending to prehistoric eras, with evidence of Nuragic civilization and earlier settlements from the 5th millennium BC. The Phoenicians established Sulky as a trading port in the 8th century BC, using its coastal location and proximity to the mineral-rich Sulcis region, which had lead and silver. This made it one of Sardinia's prosperous cities, alongside Caralis (modern-day Cagliari).

By the late 6th century BC, Sant'Antioco came under Carthaginian rule. Archaeological sites, such as the Tophet and the Punic necropolis, date from this era. Following the First Punic War, in 238 BC, the Romans took control, renaming the city Plumbaria due to its lead deposits. They connected it to the mainland by constructing an artificial isthmus and the Roman Bridge in the 1st or 2nd century AD, a structure that remained in use until 1954.

A Legacy of Faith and Fortitude

After the decline of the Western Roman Empire, Sant'Antioco became a Byzantine stronghold. It faced Saracen attacks starting in the early 8th century. These raids led to the gradual abandonment of the island, with inhabitants seeking refuge in more protected inland areas. The island's repopulation began in the 18th century under Savoy rule. The town is named after Saint Antiochus, an early Christian evangelizer believed to have been martyred around 125-127 AD. His relics were reportedly discovered in 1615 within the catacombs beneath the Basilica of Sant'Antioco Martire, a site that was originally a Byzantine church from the 5th or 6th century AD.

• —Lungomare Amerigo Vespucci (Port of Sant'Antioco) — This waterfront promenade shows the island's maritime culture. Fishing boats are visible, and in the mornings, the port is active with fresh catches. The area has restaurants serving local seafood.
• —Via Necropoli (Entrance to the Punic Necropolis) — This archaeological area contains tombs from the Carthaginian period (6th to 3rd centuries BC). These underground tombs were later adapted and connected to early Christian catacombs.
• —Tophet Archaeological Area — An open-air sanctuary used by the Phoenicians and Punics for the burial of stillborn babies and infants who died shortly after birth. Artifacts recovered from here are displayed in the local archaeological museum.
• —Roman Bridge of Sant'Antioco — Known as "Su Ponti Mannu" (the Great Bridge), this structure, built in the 1st or 2nd century AD, connected the ancient city of Sulci to the Sardinian mainland. A short section of the original Roman road is still visible, partially submerged at low tide.
• —Piazza Repubblica 1 (Exterior of the National Archaeological Museum "Ferruccio Barreca") — This museum provides an overview of Sant'Antioco's history, from the Nuragic period through the Phoenician, Punic, and Roman eras. It houses pottery, jewelry, funerary objects, and artifacts from the Tophet and Punic necropolis.
• —Piazza Basilica (Basilica of Sant'Antioco Martire) — This Byzantine church, dating back to the 5th or 6th century AD, stands over the tomb of Saint Antiochus. It has a central nave and side aisles, with a crypt believed to hold the saint's relics.
• —Piazza Umberto I — A central square in the town, with cafes and shops.

The period between May and October is suitable for visiting Sant'Antioco, when the weather is warm for beaches and boat trips. June and September have pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than August. July is the hottest month, with average daytime temperatures reaching 30°C (87°F) and little rain. Sea temperatures are suitable for swimming from June to September, peaking at 25°C (76°F) in August.

Avoid visiting in November, the rainiest month, with an average of 10 days of rain. While winter (November to March) offers milder temperatures, some restaurants, beach facilities, and secondary attractions may have reduced hours or close.

Sant'Antioco Island is connected to mainland Sardinia by a causeway and bridge, making it accessible by car without a ferry. Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) is the closest airport, about 80-90 km away. You can reach Sant'Antioco by rental car, private transfer, train (to Carbonia, then bus), or public bus. The ARST bus company operates routes throughout Sardinia, with connections from Carbonia to Sant'Antioco town, taking about 30 minutes.

Within Sant'Antioco town, the main sights are in the historic center and around the ancient approach from the mainland, making it walkable. For exploring the island's beaches and coastal areas, renting a car is recommended due to infrequent bus service to outlying areas. Parking is generally available, with some equipped rest areas for motorhomes. Local markets offer fresh produce; the waterfront area is active in the mornings with fishermen selling their catch.
