From Phoenician Port to Roman Hub

Olbia's history shows the influence of various civilizations. The city's name, from the Greek word "Olbios" meaning "happy" or "prosperous," suggests ancient origins. Archaeological evidence indicates the first urban settlement was established by the Punics (Carthaginians) around the 4th century BCE, though traces of Nuragic civilization in the area predate this. Other interpretations suggest Phoenicians founded the city in the mid-8th century BCE, followed by Greek settlers from Phocaea in 630 BCE.

Olbia's location in a natural bay, protected from winds, made it an ideal port. This geographical advantage supported its growth as a trading hub, connecting Sardinia with the Apennine Peninsula and North Africa. In 238 BCE, Olbia came under Roman control after the First Punic War, becoming an important naval and trading port. The Romans expanded the port and invested in urban infrastructure, including aqueducts, thermal baths, and paved roads. Traces of these Roman structures are still visible today. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Olbia, then known as Civita, became the capital of the Judicate of Gallura in the 11th century, one of Sardinia's four independent medieval states.

Medieval Decline and Modern Revival

Following its peak as a Roman port and medieval capital, Olbia experienced a period of decline. The city faced repeated Saracen raids and malaria outbreaks, which led to a significant decrease in population and economic activity. By the late Middle Ages and early modern period, Olbia was reduced to a small village, overshadowed by other Sardinian centers. Its strategic importance as a port diminished, and much of its ancient infrastructure fell into disrepair or was repurposed.

The city began to revive in the 19th century with the construction of new port facilities and improved connections to the Sardinian interior. The establishment of ferry lines to mainland Italy further boosted its economy. In the 20th century, particularly after World War II, Olbia underwent rapid development, becoming a major gateway for tourism to the Costa Smeralda. The expansion of Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and the modernization of its port solidified its role as a key economic center in northeastern Sardinia. Today, the city's layout and some of its buildings reflect this modern growth, while archaeological sites provide evidence of its long history.

• —Basilica di San Simplicio — This Romanesque church was largely rebuilt in 1198 by Pisan colonists. Its exterior shows the Pisan Romanesque architectural style, and frescoes are inside.
• —Punic Walls Remains (Via Torino) — These ancient walls date back to the 4th century BCE. They represent the city's initial fortified settlement.
• —Roman Port Remains (Via Genova) — The archaeological remains here indicate the activity of Olbia's Roman port, which was important for trade between Sardinia and the mainland.
• —Roman Aqueduct Remains (Via dell'Acquedotto) — This Roman aqueduct, built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, transported water from the Cabu Abbas springs to the city's thermal baths along a 3.5 km route. Intact arches and a settling tank are still visible.
• —Archaeological Area of Via Nanni (Domus remains) — This site reveals remnants of Roman-era domus (houses), offering insight into daily life in ancient Olbia.
• —National Archaeological Museum of Olbia — This museum houses findings from prehistoric, Phoenician, Greek, Punic, and Roman periods up to the 20th century. It displays relics of Roman and medieval ships found in the gulf, including Roman rudders and ship masts.

The best times to visit Olbia for outdoor activities are from mid-May to mid-July and from late August to mid-October. During these periods, days are clear and rainless with temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. For hot-weather activities and swimming, late June to early September is suitable, with water temperatures averaging 23°C to 25°C in August.

Avoid July and August if you prefer fewer crowds, as these are the peak tourist months, leading to higher prices. Winters (December to February) are mild, with temperatures around 6°C to 14°C, but many beach services may be closed.

Olbia is connected by Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB), a short drive from the city center. Olbia is also a major passenger port with connections to the Italian mainland, particularly Civitavecchia.

Within the city center, many historical sites, including Corso Umberto I and Piazza Civitas, are explored on foot. Olbia City Centre is suitable for walking and exploring historical sites. For destinations further afield, public buses are available. Parking can be found in designated areas, but during peak season, it is advisable to seek accommodation with parking or use paid lots. Local markets often take place in the mornings, typically closing around lunchtime. Shops generally observe a siesta in the afternoon, reopening in the late afternoon.
