Early Settlements and Nuragic Presence

The Baunei area shows human presence from the Neolithic period, with traces found in the "Su Marinaiu" cave near Cala Luna. Archaeological finds include obsidian remains and pottery from the Eneolithic age, a period marked by the use of copper. The region contains Nuragic civilization artifacts, with nuraghi (ancient stone towers unique to Sardinia) and Nuragic villages, fortresses, and 'giants' tombs' across the Margine and Golgo Plateaus. Some nuraghi date back to 730 BC.

The first documented mention of Baunei appears in 1313 or 1316, when it was listed among the villages of the curatorìa of Ogliastra, part of the Giudicato of Cagliari, then under Pisan control. Following the decline of Byzantine authority in Sardinia in the mid-11th century, four independent kingdoms, Giudicati, emerged. Baunei, if it existed then, would have been part of the curatoria d'Ogliastra within the Giudicato of Cagliari. Local legend suggests the town was founded around 1000 AD by a shepherd seeking refuge from an Arab invasion, a plausible origin given the area's natural defenses.

A Village Shaped by Geography and Tradition

Baunei's location, at almost 500 meters above sea level on the limestone cliffs of Monte Santo, contributed to its development. This isolation meant the village was largely unaffected by pirate attacks that occurred in Sardinia for centuries. An 1834 account by Sardinian abbot Vittorio Angius noted the village's reliance on pastoralism, with villagers still believing they could identify the ruins of the founding shepherd's dwelling. This connection to pastoral roots remains evident in local traditions. In 1603, Baunei became part of a marquisate, later incorporated into the province of Baunei in 1806, before several administrative changes in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Today, Baunei is known for its coastal landscapes and as a point of access to beaches in the Gulf of Orosei.

• —Piazza Indipendenza — This is the main square of Baunei, a central point in the historic center where the Church of San Nicola di Bari is located. It offers a view of local life and the village's traditional architecture.
• —Church of San Nicola di Bari — Dedicated to the town's patron saint, this church was built in the 17th century and reconstructed in the 20th century. Its faux Baroque façade conceals the apse and faces the bell tower.
• —Baunei Viewpoint — From this elevated position, views of the surrounding mountainous landscape and the distant Gulf of Arbatax are visible. It is a location for observing the meeting of mountains and sea.
• —Old Fountain (Fontana di Usuonu) — Built in the 19th century, this fountain was a gathering point for village women who washed clothes and collected water. It features three large round arches and bathing pools inside.
• —Old Municipal Building (Ex-Municipio) — This former municipal building stands as a historical landmark in the town's core, reflecting periods of local governance and design.
• —Golgo Plateau — A short drive from Baunei, this plateau offers natural features. Here you can find the Nuraghe Coa 'e Serra, a Nuragic site, and Su Sterru, one of Europe's deepest single-span sinkholes.

The period from late May to mid-June and from early September to mid-October offers mild temperatures and fewer crowds, suitable for hiking and coastal exploration. The sea remains warm enough for swimming in early autumn.

July and August are peak season, with average daily high temperatures above 26°C and highs reaching 29°C in August. This period is suitable for swimming and boat tours, but expect higher prices and crowded beaches and trails.

Avoid visiting from November to March. This is the off-season, with cooler temperatures, occasional rain, and cloudier skies. Some attractions and accommodations may be closed.

Baunei is reached by car, as public transport in this part of Sardinia is limited. The closest international airports are Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) (about a two-hour drive) and Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) (about a two-and-a-half-hour drive). Renting a car is recommended for exploring Baunei and its surroundings. Roads connecting to the Baunei Coast are maintained, though some mountainous sections are winding.

Within the village of Baunei, movement is on foot. There are free street-parking areas in the old town and side streets. Public transport to areas like the Golgo plateau or the coves is sparse, but summer shuttles, local taxis, or boat tours from Santa Maria Navarrese are available.

Many smaller shops may observe a siesta (midday closure).
