From Numbay to Hollandia

Before the arrival of Europeans, the area now known as Jayapura was called Numbay, a trading hub for indigenous Papuan tribes. Trade, particularly active between 1897 and 1905, centered around Metui Debi Island and the area of the former Gereja Pengharapan on Sam Ratulangi Road. The local society, or Tabi, was led by an ondoafi (chief of the tribe). By 1849, the Numbay region was a tributary of the Tidore Sultanate.

On March 7, 1910, a detachment of the Dutch navy, under Captain F.J.P. Sachse, established a camp called Kloofkamp near the mouth of the Numbay river in Humboldt Bay. The Dutch flag was raised, and the settlement was officially named Hollandia, becoming the capital of a district of the same name in the northeast of West New Guinea. Hollandia served as the capital of Netherlands New Guinea from 1945 to 1962.

World War II and Shifting Sovereignty

During World War II, Hollandia was occupied by Japanese forces in 1942. Allied forces, including American troops under General Douglas MacArthur, liberated the city on April 22, 1944, during Operation "Reckless." The area then became a major base for MacArthur, with half a million US soldiers passing through. After the war, the city returned to Dutch administration.

In 1962, the territory was handed over to the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA), and the city was given the dual name Hollandia/Kota Baru (New Town). When Indonesia took control on May 1, 1963, it became solely Kota Baru. Briefly renamed Sukarnopura in 1964 after then-President Sukarno, it finally acquired its current name, Jayapura, in 1968. The name "Jayapura" is Sanskrit for "city of victory."

• —Tugu Peringatan Perang Dunia II (WWII Memorial) — This memorial commemorates the events of World War II in the region, specifically the Allied liberation of Hollandia (Jayapura) in 1944.
• —Jayapura Post Office (Former Dutch Post Office) — This building is a remnant of the Dutch colonial era, showing the architectural style from that period.
• —Taman Yos Sudarso (Waterfront Park) — This park offers views of Yos Sudarso Bay, a central point for local life and coastal activities.

Jayapura experiences a tropical rainforest climate with consistent warmth and humidity year-round, typically ranging from 24°C to 32°C. The dry season, from May to October, is generally the best time to visit, offering clearer skies and calmer seas for outdoor activities. The peak for general outdoor tourist activities is often in late August. The rainy season, from November to April, brings heavier afternoon showers, though mornings can still be clear. While quieter and less crowded, with potentially lower accommodation rates, the increased rainfall might limit some outdoor explorations. The clearest month is August, while December is the cloudiest.

Jayapura is accessed via Sentani International Airport (DJJ), located approximately 40 kilometers from the city center. Flights connect Jayapura to major Indonesian cities like Jakarta, Makassar, and Biak. From the airport, taxis and shuttle services are available; agree on a price beforehand. Within the city, public transportation includes Trans Metro Jayapura buses, with a fare of IDR 3,500, and local minibuses known as angkot, which are more affordable. Conventional taxis and ride-sharing services are also available. For exploring areas outside the city, renting a car or arranging tours with local guides is recommended. The city center is walkable, and a public transport terminal is located near the post office.
