From Seven Islands to a City

Mumbai began as an archipelago of seven islands: Isle of Bombay, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's Island. Human occupation dates back to the South Asian Stone Age. The Maurya Empire ruled the islands in the 3rd century BCE, and Ptolemy referenced them in 150 CE. The Koli fishing community, whose deity Mumbā is believed to have given the city its name, populated the region at the beginning of the Common Era.

In 1534, the islands became Portuguese territory through the Treaty of Bassein. They were transferred to the British in 1661 as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry upon her marriage to King Charles II of England. The British East India Company leased Mumbai in 1668 and moved its presidency from Surat to Mumbai in 1687, establishing it as a trading post. Engineering projects, such as the Hornby Vellard in 1784, gradually combined the islands into a single landmass.

The Development of a Commercial Center

During the 19th century, Mumbai grew as a port city, particularly with the increase in cotton trade during the American Civil War and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, which shortened the sea route to Europe. This period saw the construction of Victorian Gothic architecture, which changed the city's appearance. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, built between 1878 and 1887, became a symbol of Bombay as a major international mercantile port. In 1995, the city's name was officially changed from Bombay to Mumbai, honoring the patron goddess Mumbadevi of the Koli community.

• —Gateway of India — This arch, completed in 1924, commemorates the landing of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. It faces the Arabian Sea and offers views of boats in the harbor.
• —Sassoon Docks — Established in 1875 by Albert Abdullah David Sassoon, this was Mumbai's first wet dock. It functions as a fish market where fishermen unload their catch and auctions occur. The dock also features street art from the St+art Urban Art Festival.
• —Ballard Estate — This business district, developed in the early 20th century, features European-style architecture, including neoclassical and Edwardian buildings. The area has uniform facades and a planned layout.
• —Horniman Circle Garden — A circular garden surrounded by colonial buildings in the Fort area. It is a green space in the city center.
• —Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) — Formerly Victoria Terminus, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was built between 1878 and 1887. Its Victorian Gothic Revival style combines with traditional Indian architectural elements. Look for carvings and the central dome topped with a statue representing "Progress."
• —Crawford Market (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai) — Completed in 1869, this market combines Norman Gothic and Flemish architecture. It was the first building in India to be illuminated by electricity in 1882. Inside, vendors sell fruits, vegetables, and other goods under an iron and glass roof.
• —Mumbadevi Temple — This temple is dedicated to the goddess Mumbadevi, the patron deity of the Koli fishing community, from whom Mumbai takes its name. The current structure dates to 1737.
• —Marine Drive Promenade — This C-shaped promenade runs along the Arabian Sea. It features Art Deco architecture and offers sunset views.

The period from October to February is suitable for visiting Mumbai. The weather is cool and dry, with temperatures between 18°C and 32°C. Humidity is also lower, which supports sightseeing.

Avoid the monsoon season, from June to September. Mumbai receives heavy rainfall then, with July averaging 23.4 inches, which can cause flooding and disrupt travel. Summers, from March to June, are hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 40°C in May, making outdoor activities difficult.

Mumbai is served by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, and Terminal 2 handles international flights; they are 5 kilometers apart. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available from the airport.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway, or "local trains," connects distant suburbs to the city center. It is affordable but crowded during peak hours (8-11 AM and 5-9 PM). Ladies-only compartments are available. The Mumbai Metro and public buses (BEST) are other options. Black-and-yellow metered taxis are common in the city center; confirm the meter is used. Auto-rickshaws operate in suburban areas.

Driving in Mumbai is not recommended for tourists due to street conditions and signage. Markets like Crawford Market are generally open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
