From Roman Settlement to Royal Retreat

The area of Tata has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological findings dating back to 50,000 BCE. It became a Roman settlement, Brigetio, a commercial and military center. The first mention of Tata dates to 1221. The town's name may come from the Lombard king Tato, or, according to the medieval Chronicum Pictum, from Saint Stephen, who called his godfather, Count Deodatus of Sauseverino, "tata" (meaning 'old man' in Hungarian).

Tata Castle was built by the Lackfi family in the late 14th century. Its period as a royal summer residence began under King Sigismund of Luxembourg between 1397 and 1409, who transformed it into a U-shaped fortress with four corner towers. King Matthias Corvinus later had it rebuilt in a Renaissance style, inspired by Italian water castles.

Ottoman Occupation and Esterházy Influence

During the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, Tata Castle served as a fortress, changing hands multiple times and suffering damage. It was captured by the Turks in 1543. The castle was burned by the Habsburgs in retaliation for Rákóczi's War of Independence.

A new era began in 1727 when Count József Esterházy purchased Tata and its surrounding villages. The Esterházy family initiated construction projects, leading to Baroque palaces, churches, and public buildings. This shaped much of the town's current appearance. This period saw the creation of the Esterházy Palace, built between 1764 and 1769, and the English Park, one of Hungary's first English-style gardens.

• —Tata Castle — This water castle, on the northern tip of Öreg Lake, houses the Kuny Domokos Museum. You can explore its grounds, view stone carvings from the Roman and Middle Ages, and see exhibits on local ceramics and aristocratic life.
• —Esterházy Palace — This late Baroque building, designed by Jakab Fellner in the 18th century, displays the aristocratic lifestyle of the Esterházy family through its "Island of Peace" exhibition.
• —English Park (Angolkert) — This park, established by the Esterházy family in the 18th century, features artificial ruins and grottoes. It is one of Hungary's oldest English-style gardens.
• —Kálvária Hill — At 166 meters, this is Tata's highest point. You will find a Baroque Calvary chapel built around 1770 by Antal Schweiger, and a lookout tower. Part of the hill is a geological nature reserve, where rocks from all three periods of the Mesozoic Era can be found.
• —Öreg Lake (Old Lake) — This lake, formed during the reign of King Sigismund, is central to Tata. It is a resting place for migratory birds, especially wild geese, celebrated annually during the Tata Wild Geese Festival. You can walk along its promenade.
• —Fényes Nature Trail — This interactive trail features a 1350-meter-long pile walkway through a marshland. It includes a lookout tower and the opportunity to cross a lily-covered lake by boat or suspension bridge.

The best time to visit Tata for outdoor activities is from early June to mid-September. July is the hottest month, averaging 26°C highs. During summer, the town has festivals like the Water, Music, Flower Festival in late June. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds, suitable for sightseeing and viewing foliage around the lake. The Tata Wild Geese Festival occurs in autumn. Winters (November to February) are cold and snowy, with average lows of -3°C in January. Avoid late autumn if you dislike chilly, potentially rainy weather.

Tata is 70 km (43 miles) from Budapest and is accessible by road and rail. Hungarian Railways (MÁV) operates direct trains from Budapest-Deli to Tata every 30 minutes, with a journey time of about an hour. Tickets cost around 1,300–1,600 Ft. Buses are also available. If driving, the M1 motorway (E60, E75) from Vienna to Budapest passes through the outer city limits.

Tata is compact and walkable, with most major sights accessible on foot. For longer distances or attractions outside the center, local buses cost around €1 to €2 per ride. Bike rental is another option, typically costing €8 to €12 per day. Parking is generally available, and many major attractions like the Old Lake and Esterházy Palace grounds have low or no entry fees.
