From Roman Outpost to Medieval Market Town

Keszthely's history begins in the Neolithic Age, with archaeological findings from the Copper and Bronze Ages. The Romans arrived in 12 BC, establishing a fortified settlement named Valcum south of the modern town. Remains of its southern gate, a basilica, and a storehouse are still underground, with some visible remnants. The name "Keszthely" is thought to derive from the Latin "castrum" (fort) or the Slavic "Kostel" (castle).

After the Roman Empire, the area saw various tribes during the Migration Period, including Huns and Avars, who left behind burial grounds. From the mid-5th to mid-7th century, a "Keszthely Culture" developed, characterized by a mixed Romanized, Germanic, and Avar Christian population. Keszthely is first mentioned in writing in 1247 as "Kezthel" and was a royal village during the Árpád age. It gained market town status during the reign of Louis the Great (1342-1382), and by the 15th century, it was a market town, though still largely composed of a single long street.

The Festetics Era and Modern Development

The town's development was interrupted by the Ottoman occupation in the 16th century, during which its churches and monasteries were converted into a fortress for defense. In 1739, the Festetics family, of Croatian origin, acquired Keszthely, making it the center of their domain. Kristóf Festetics began constructing the family palace in 1745 and established a hospital in 1759. His son, Pál III Festetics, became a count in 1772 and served as a legal and financial advisor to Maria Theresa.

The 18th and 19th centuries marked a period of growth for Keszthely under the Festetics' patronage. György I Festetics founded Europe's first agricultural college, the Georgikon, in 1797. He also initiated the Helikon Festivities in 1817, a literary celebration. The Festetics Palace acquired its current form through expansions, including a tower and ballrooms added in 1887 by Tasziló II Festetics, who was granted the title of prince in 1911. By the early 20th century, Keszthely had become a holiday resort on Lake Balaton, a role it continues to hold today.

• —Festetics Palace — This 18th-century Baroque Revival estate is Keszthely's main landmark. It contains rooms with period furniture, the Helikon Library with over 86,000 volumes (Hungary's only fully preserved aristocratic library), a carriage exhibition, a hunting museum, a large model railway, and the Palm House with tropical plants and a bird park.
• —Festetics Castle Park — The English and French gardens surrounding the palace are protected for their plant life.
• —Fő tér (Main Square) — This central square contains the Gothic Church of Our Lady of Hungary, with the largest Gothic fresco cycle in Hungary visible near the sanctuary. The church tower can be climbed for views of the town and lake.
• —Kossuth Lajos utca — This pedestrian street connects the Festetics Palace to the main square and has shops, cafes, and restaurants.
• —Lake Balaton Promenade — The promenade offers views of the lake. It has cafes and benches, and boat trips depart from the pier.
• —Balaton Museum — This museum presents the history, natural environment, and daily life of Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake, through permanent collections, including Roman and medieval stone exhibitions.
• —Georgikon Farm Museum — This museum shows the history of Hungarian agricultural education at Europe's first agricultural college, founded in 1797 by György I Festetics.

For warm-weather activities, visit Keszthely from early June to mid-September. July is the hottest month, averaging 28°C (82°F) during the day. The summer months (June to August) are peak season, with beaches, water sports, and outdoor events. Expect crowds and higher accommodation prices.

For fewer crowds and moderate weather, consider late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October). Temperatures are mild, and most businesses are open. Winter, from November to March, is cold and snowy, with average lows of -2°C (28°F) in January. Many tourist attractions may have reduced hours or be closed.

Keszthely is connected by train and bus. Direct train services from Budapest's Déli pályaudvar take about 2.5 hours. Buses from Budapest-Népliget also take approximately 2.5 hours. Hévíz–Balaton Airport (SOB), 10.2 km away, offers limited regional international flights. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is about 169 km away, with rail and bus connections to Keszthely.

The city center is explored on foot. Kossuth Lajos utca is a pedestrian zone. Local buses and taxis are available for destinations outside the city center. A farmers' market takes place in Piac square on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
