From Market Town to Ottoman Haven

Kecskemét's story begins with early settlements dating back 5,000 years, with continuous habitation since the 1st century BC when the Sarmatians invaded the area. By the early 13th century, seven small villages existed in the area, each with 200–300 residents. These were all destroyed during the First Mongol invasion around 1241. The town was rebuilt and, by 1368, King Louis I of Hungary officially recognized Kecskemét as an oppidium (town), signifying its importance as a customs-house and marketplace along trading routes.

A chapter in Kecskemét's history unfolded during the Ottoman conquest of Hungary in the 16th century. While many settlements on the Great Hungarian Plain faced destruction, Kecskemét gained a protected status. Residents from surrounding villages sought refuge within its defensive palisades, and the town arranged to pay taxes directly to the pasha in Buda. This direct payment ensured the Sultan's protection, allowing Kecskemét to develop during a century and a half of Ottoman rule. The town's economy relied on animal husbandry and trade during this period, leading to the establishment of the first guilds in the 16th century.

Shifting Sands and Art Nouveau Construction

The 18th century brought a challenge from the land itself. Overgrazing by tens of thousands of cattle on the surrounding steppe lands depleted the natural vegetation, turning the sandy soils into shifting wastelands. The pastoral economy collapsed, and it took nearly a century for the region to recover. In the 19th century, efforts were made to stabilize the soil through reforestation and the planting of fruit trees and vines. This agricultural shift proved successful, and Kecskemét became known for its fruit, particularly apricots, and its apricot brandy (barackpálinka).

This prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to an architectural boom, resulting in the construction of many of the city's Art Nouveau buildings. The Kecskemét City Hall, completed in 1897, and the Cifra Palace, built in 1902, are examples of this era, showcasing a Hungarian Art Nouveau style. While the 20th century saw a decrease in the city's importance due to economic crises and the World Wars, Kecskemét remains a regional center and the capital of Bács-Kiskun County.

• —Kecskemét City Hall (Kecskemét Városháza) — This Art Nouveau building, built between 1893 and 1897, stands on the Main Square. Its facade has Zsolnay majolica tiles and pyrogranite elements. Inside, the Ceremonial Hall features murals by Bertalan Székely depicting Hungarian history. A carillon on the facade plays melodies every hour.
• —Franciscan Church (Ferences templom) — The oldest historical building in Kecskemét, its earliest Gothic elements date back to the second half of the 14th century. Over the centuries, it has seen Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque additions. It was used by both Catholics and Protestants until 1564.
• —Cifra Palace (Cifra-palota) — Completed in 1902, this Art Nouveau building is known for its colors and decor. It houses the Kecskemét Art Gallery.
• —Great Reformed Church (Nagytemplom) — This large Catholic co-cathedral, also known as Kecskemét Cathedral, was built between 1774 and 1806 in Baroque style. Its tower, which burned down in 1819, was rebuilt by 1863 to its current form. It is the largest church in the Pannonian Plain.
• —József Katona Theatre (Katona József Színház) — This Neo-Baroque theatre, built in 1896, is named after József Katona, a native of Kecskemét and the author of the first Hungarian national drama.
• —Former Kecskemét Synagogue — Built in Moorish style in 1864, this white structure now serves as the House of Science and Technics, hosting conferences and events. The remains of an older synagogue from 1818 are in its courtyard.
• —Former Piarist College (Piarista Gimnázium) — The Piarist order established their school in Kecskemét in the early 18th century. The secondary grammar school building in the city center is in Classicist style.

The period from late May to mid-September offers pleasant weather for outdoor activities. During these months, average daily high temperatures are above 23°C (73°F), with July averaging 27°C (81°F). Summers are warm, but less crowded than major tourist cities. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer temperatures around 12-13°C (53-54°F), and fewer crowds, suitable for walking.

Winter (December-February) is cold, with average daily highs below 7°C (45°F) and lows around -4 to 2°C (25-36°F). It is the wettest season with short daylight hours and frequent rain or snow. This period is quieter and potentially cheaper, but less suitable for extended outdoor exploration.

Kecskemét is approximately 86 kilometers (53 miles) southeast of Budapest and a similar distance from Szeged. The most convenient way to reach Kecskemét is by train from Budapest Nyugati station, with regular hourly departures and a journey time of about 80 minutes. Most of Kecskemét's attractions are in the city center and are walkable from the train station, which is about a ten-minute walk.

For getting around the city, the local bus system is an option. Parking is available for drivers. Cash is often preferred in Kecskemét, though cards are accepted at many establishments. ATMs are available. Tipping around 10% for good service in restaurants is customary. Kecskemét has low crime rates.
