The Solovetsky Monastery, founded in the 15th century on an archipelago in the White Sea, was for centuries a beacon of Russian Orthodox spirituality, a powerful cultural and economic center, and an impregnable fortress. Its imposing granite walls housed majestic churches, rich libraries, and cells where generations of monks dedicated themselves to God, far from the world's turmoil. Its strategic position also made it a place of exile for political and religious dissidents under the Tsars, foreshadowing a darker destiny.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the monastery was closed and nationalized by the Bolshevik regime. In 1923, it was transformed into the SLON (Solovetsky Special Purpose Camp), the first and most famous of the Gulag camps, an experimental laboratory for re-education through labor. Intellectuals, artists, priests, and political opponents were deported there by tens of thousands, subjected to inhumane living conditions, famine, and summary executions, marking the beginning of the era of Soviet concentration camps.
