You are a clandestine agent, tasked with uncovering the truth behind Operation Panzerfaust, October 1944, Budapest.
As Soviet forces closed in, Regent Miklós Horthy
The Last Nazi Coup in Central Europe
« I declare that Hungary has concluded a preliminary armistice with the Soviet Union and ceases all military action against it. »— Miklós Horthy, radio proclamation of October 15, 1944, 1 PM
In October 1944, Admiral Miklós Horthy, Regent of Hungary since 1920, realizes the war is lost. Soviet troops approach Budapest, Germany collapses. On October 11, he secretly sends a delegation to Moscow to negotiate an armistice with Stalin. Hitler, informed by his secret services, immediately orders Operation Panzerfaust to Otto Skorzeny, Mussolini's liberator.
On October 15 at dawn, German commandos kidnap Miklós Horthy Jr., the Regent's son, near the Foreign Ministry. Despite Horthy's radio armistice proclamation at 1 PM, German tanks surround the royal castle. At 6 PM, under threat of his son's execution, Horthy abdicates. Ferenc Szálasi, leader of the Arrow Cross, takes power. Hungary will remain in the war until April 1945, at the cost of 600,000 additional deaths.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Buda Castle and government district often feels more authentic then.
