When Spain ruled the world from a village square
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Philip II chose Madrid as his capital in 1561. A dusty village became the centre of the largest empire ever known. Its court intrigues can still be read in every alley.
Madrid had nothing of a capital when Philip II chose it. No cathedral, no port, no navigable river. Just a central position and a Moorish alcázar perched on a windy plateau. Within decades, this small town became the beating heart of an empire where the sun never set. The Habsburgs built palaces, convents and squares — and hatched the conspiracies that shook Europe.
« "Madrid is the only European capital not chosen by history, but by a king who wanted to escape the history of others." »— — On Plaza Mayor, between the arcades where autos-da-fé and royal celebrations were held
In 1561, Philip II left Toledo and moved his court to Madrid. It was a strategic choice: the city sat at the geographical centre of the peninsula, far from the regional powers of Barcelona, Seville or Valladolid. But it was also a wild gamble. Madrid had neither infrastructure nor prestige. Everything had to be built.
The Habsburgs transformed the city at prodigious speed. The Plaza Mayor, completed in 1619, became the theatre of power: coronations, bullfights, public executions and canonisations were all held there. The Royal Palace — rebuilt after the alcázar fire of 1734 — overlooks the Manzanares. Convents sprang up everywhere, earning Madrid the nickname "city of nuns".
But Habsburg Madrid was also the Madrid of Velázquez, Lope de Vega and Calderón. The Spanish Golden Age was written in the corrales de comedias, the painting studios and the salons of the great houses. When the dynasty died out in 1700 with Charles II, it left behind a city that had learned to play among the greats — and has never stopped since.
