Lower Fort Garry — The Disputed Treaties

🎭Your Mission

You are a confidential agent, dispatched to Lower Fort Garry in August 1871, tasked with discreetly auditing the proceedings of Treaty No.

1. Governor Alexander Morris has arrived to

Alexander Morris — Her Majesty's diplomat at Empire's edge

« We offer to the Indians the most liberal terms ever granted by any government to its aboriginal subjects. »
Alexander Morris, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, 1871

The end of Hudson's Bay Company's commercial empire

In 1870, Hudson's Bay Company ceded Rupert's Land to the new Dominion of Canada for £300,000. This vast territory, governed since 1670 by royal charter, covered a third of present-day North America. Lower Fort Garry, built in 1830 as the company's administrative center, became the symbol of this historic transition from the fur trade era to agricultural colonization.

Treaty No. 1, signed on August 3, 1871 at Lower Fort Garry, marked the beginning of a process that would see eleven numbered treaties concluded between 1871 and 1921. Alexander Morris, a Scottish jurist appointed lieutenant-governor, personally negotiated Treaties 3, 4, 5, and 6. These agreements ceded 520,000 square kilometers to European settlers in exchange for reserves, annuities, and promises of education. Henry Prince, Ojibwe chief, and Mis-koo-kenew, Cree chief, signed on behalf of their peoples, inaugurating a new era with lasting consequences.

Q02How long does it take to finish Lower Fort Garry — The Disputed Treaties?
