Asakusa — Silenced Testimonies

🎭Your Mission

You are a dedicated chronicler in late Edo-period Asakusa, tasked with preserving the district's forgotten testimonies.

Your mission leads you in the footsteps of the Senso-ji founders, through

Delve into the silent narratives of Tokyo, where every stone and lantern reveals Asakusa's millennial soul.

The story that haunts this land

Your journey in Tokyo begins at Kaminarimon Gate, erected in 1960. This replica of the original Edo-period gate, destroyed during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, stands 11.7 meters tall and 11.6 meters wide. At its center, a 700 kg red chochin lantern, hung in 1949, bears the inscription 'Thunder Gate'. Inside, the guardian statues of Fujin and Raijin watch over, witnesses to Asakusa's intangible cultural heritage, recognized by UNESCO. This Tokyo Historic Site marks the threshold to a deep exploration of the district's past, where every architectural detail tells a part of history.

Beyond Kaminarimon, Nakamise-dori Street stretches for 250 meters, a shopping street whose origins date back to 1681. At that time, merchants already set up their stalls for temple pilgrims. Today, over 80 shops sell traditional wagashi sweets and ningyo dolls, recreating the atmosphere of Edo-period commerce, having been rebuilt after the 1923 earthquake. This paved path leads directly to the heart of Senso-ji, a site that attracts over 30 million visitors annually, making it Tokyo's most visited religious site, as confirmed by TripAdvisor.

The Senso-ji Temple itself was founded in 645 AD, according to temple records, by fishermen Hinokuma Hamanari and Takenari, after they discovered a statue of Kannon in the Sumida River. The main hall, the Hondo, was rebuilt in 1958 after its destruction by World War II bombings. Nearby, Asakusa Shrine, or Sanja-sama, was established in 1640 to honor these same founders. Its main hall was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1951, and it hosts the Sanja Matsuri festival since 1290, drawing 2 million visitors over three days. Its Gongen-zukuri style architecture enshrines three deities.

Your route then takes you towards the Sumida River Azumabashi Bridge, whose current version was built in 1931. 412 meters long, it connects Asakusa to Sumida City and has offered views of the Tokyo Skytree since 2012. This bridge, named after the Azuma clan, was historically a crossing point for pilgrims to Senso-ji. It is also a pickup location for the Real Escape Game Crossing Asakusa, located at 1-17-2 Azumabashi. A detour to Hanayashiki Amusement Park, Asia's oldest amusement park, opened in 1853 as a flower garden, allows you to see a different facet of Tokyo's heritage. This 0.14 km² site, within walking distance of Senso-ji, features a wooden roller coaster from 1927 and is also listed as a Tangible Cultural Property.

Your quest for silent testimonies in Tokyo has allowed you to traverse centuries of history and culture. From the grandeur of Kaminarimon to the hustle and bustle of Nakamise-dori merchants, through the spirituality of Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Shrine, you have explored monuments that are not only Tokyo Historic Sites but also living symbols of Japanese heritage. This thematic walking tour offers you a tangible understanding of Asakusa's evolution and its role in Tokyo's history, revealing unique anecdotes and perspectives on this dynamic city.

Q07What is augmented reality exactly?
