Basel — Council of Basel Secrets

Basel becomes the theater of the greatest challenge to papal authority in 1431, when the council convened by Martin V to reform the Church transforms into open rebellion. Via the Mittlere Brücke of 1351, a 365-meter long wooden bridge rebuilt in 1905, secret couriers transit between supporters of Eugene IV and Felix V. Its 14th-century watchtower, 20 meters high, surveys the Rhine where French, imperial and pontifical influences clash.
