Founded in 1661 as a Cossack fort, Irkutsk quickly became the vital hub of the Tea Route, a major trade artery between Imperial China and Tsarist Russia. After the Treaty of Kyakhta in 1727, which formalized border trade, the city experienced phenomenal growth. Thousands of caravans, laden with tea, silk, and Chinese porcelain on one side, and furs and Russian metals on the other, passed through its docks and bazaars, transforming Irkutsk into a cosmopolitan and prosperous city, nicknamed the 'Paris of Siberia'.
The Golden Age of the Tea Route culminated in the 19th century, before the opening of new Chinese ports and the development of maritime and later railway transport (with the Trans-Siberian) gradually shifted the center of gravity of trade.
