Kapiti Island, named 'Te Waewae-Kāpiti-o-Tara-rāua-ko-Rangitāne' (the knees of Tara and Rangitāne), has always been a place of great strategic and spiritual significance for Māori iwi (tribes). In the early 19th century, it became the impregnable stronghold of Chief Te Rauparaha and his Ngāti Toa tribe, who used it as a base to expand their influence and trade with Europeans, particularly for acquiring muskets.
