In the 1860s and 1870s, the influx of Chinese miners to Otago, fleeing poverty and conflict in China, faced tenacious prejudice. Although they played a crucial role in the development of the gold industry, often working claims abandoned by European settlers, they were victims of discriminatory legislation and sporadic violence. Their traditions and language were misunderstood, fueling mistrust.
Faced with this adversity, the Chinese community did not remain passive. Petitions were organized, often with the help of sympathetic missionaries or European traders, to protest against injustices.
