The Legacy of Parihaka: A Light in the Shadows
Te Whiti o Rongomai, a Maori prophet and leader, founded the village of Parihaka in the 1860s, in collaboration with Tohu Kākahi, on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. This place became a beacon of peaceful resistance against the confiscation of Maori lands by the colonial government. Inspired by a vision of peace and autonomy, the inhabitants of Parihaka cultivated their lands and lived according to principles of non-violence, refusing to recognize the land titles imposed by the Crown.
On November 5, 1881, an armed force of 1,600 men invaded Parihaka. The villagers, including children, met them with singing and offers of bread, without any physical resistance. Te Whiti and Tohu were arrested and imprisoned for years without trial, and the village lands were plundered. Despite this brutal repression, Te Whiti's teachings endured, influencing generations and marking a crucial step in the history of non-violent resistance, well before Gandhi's campaigns.
