In 1817, as Gibara rose as Cuba's key sugar port, ruthless privateer Captain Elias 'Shadow' Vargas terrorized the Windward Passage, amassing a fortune in gold and jewels
You are a seasoned treasure hunter, arriving in Gibara in 1817, having just unearthed the cryptic journal of Captain Elias 'Shadow' Vargas.
In 1817
The last secret of a forgotten buccaneer resurfaces
« « Gibara is the most graceful of all Cuban towns… Its beauty is a work of natural architecture. » »— Humberto Solás, Cuban filmmaker and founder of the Gibara International Film Festival
Officially founded in 1817 by Spanish royal decree, Gibara was for a long time the main port of Holguín province, nicknamed 'La Villa Blanca' for its immaculate colonial buildings. Strategically located on Cuba's northern coast, it became a vital commercial hub for sugar and tobacco exports. However, its exposed position also made it a prime target for privateers and pirates who infested the Windward Passage, leading to the construction of robust fortifications like El Cuartelón and the Fernando VII Battery.
With the advent of the railway in the 20th century, which diverted trade to other ports, Gibara fell into a relative economic lethargy. However, the town managed to rise from its ashes, not through trade, but through culture. In 2003, renowned filmmaker Humberto Solás founded the Gibara International Low-Budget Film Festival (FIC Gibara) there, an event that celebrates independent and low-budget cinema, breathing new life and a unique identity into this city with a glorious and forgotten past.
