Monaco-Ville — The Whispers Underground

🎭Your Mission

You are a clandestine operative within the Monegasque resistance, in Monaco-Ville, 1944.

« With God's Help »
Official motto of the Principality of Monaco

The story that haunts this land

Your journey begins in front of the Monte-Carlo Casino, a Belle Époque edifice built in 1863 by Charles Garnier at the behest of Prince Charles III. Its 40,000 m² and gaming room, inaugurated in 1865, were the scene of a strange normality during World War II. Under Italian then German control, the casino remained open to non-Jewish civilians even after 1942, offering a façade of entertainment to the Principality of Monaco while Europe was at war. This historic site in Monte-Carlo is an iconic monument of the Grimaldi world heritage.

Right next door, the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, opened in 1864 by Charles III to complement the casino's appeal, stands with its facade classified as a historical monument in 2003. This 5-star, 182-room hotel secretly housed Monegasque resistance fighters between 1942 and 1943, despite the Italian occupation. The Jardins de la Petite Afrique, created in 1963 during the casino's expansion, are named after an Arab quarter demolished in 1860. They served as a discreet passage, with their modern statues and fountains, to connect Monte-Carlo to Monaco-Ville and avoid controls during this troubled period.

Heading towards the heart of Monaco-Ville, you will cross the Avenue des Beaux-Arts before reaching the Marché de la Condamine. Inaugurated in 1953, this 3,000 m² covered market with its 200 stalls was rebuilt after World War II bombings. It has been a historical supply point since the 19th century, classified as intangible cultural heritage and open every day except Monday. This site testifies to the resilience of daily life in Monaco and the population's efforts to subsist in the face of shortages.

Your route will then lead you to the Église Saint-Charles, a parish church built in 1883 in the Condamine district. Its Neo-Romanesque style and 40 m long nave made it a refuge for many civilians during the Italian occupation between 1942 and 1943. Continuing your way along the Boulevard des Moulins, you will realize the strategic importance of these axes in Monaco's life. Port Hercule, developed in 1752 by Prince Honoré III, was an Italian naval base in 1942 before becoming the scene of Allied operations in 1944. Its 43 hectares and its 1,200 m Rainier III quay, accommodating 700 yachts, are silent witnesses to these events.

This thematic circuit through Monaco-Ville has allowed you to understand how the Prince's Palace of Monaco, a fort built in 1191 by the Grimaldi family, remained a symbol of Monegasque neutrality under Prince Louis II. From the Hôtel de Paris to Port Hercule, each monument and historic site in Monaco-Ville tells a facet of its heritage, from hidden resistance fighters to military operations, from Belle Époque splendor to the hardships of war. This interactive visit offers a unique perspective on Monaco's history, revealing the Principality's secrets between 1939 and 1945.

Q01Do I need an app or a paper guide?

Neither. Everything plays in your browser (Safari, Chrome) after you tap your activation link. No PDF to print, no download. The trail lives in your phone, that's it.

Q02How far do you walk in Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo?

Usually 2 to 4 km of total walking, within 1.5 km as the crow flies from the start point. The route is designed to be walkable at a relaxed pace, no public transport needed.

Q03Is Monaco-Ville — The Whispers Underground suitable for a challenge-seeking teen?

Absolutely. The puzzles aren't obvious — a curious teen will sweat just enough to be proud of cracking them. Progressive hints prevent frustration: if stuck, unlock hint level 1, then 2, then 3.

Q04What's the best time to start?

Morning between 10 and 11, or early afternoon around 2 PM, is ideal. You still have daylight ahead, Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo is less crowded, and the light is better for camera clues.
