The Loyalist Exodus
In 1783, the signing of the Treaty of Paris consecrated American independence and sealed the fate of 100,000 Loyalists — those American colonists who remained faithful to the British Crown. Threatened with death and stripped of their property, they fled to Canada's Maritime provinces. In spring 1783, 14,000 refugees landed at the mouth of the Saint John River, forever transforming this wilderness region.
Among them were figures like Colonel Edward Winslow, Judge Jonathan Odell, and Ward Chipman — magistrates, officers, merchants who refused to betray their oath to King George III. They founded Fredericton in 1785, the new capital of New Brunswick created for them. In this forest city, they rebuilt their institutions: courthouse, arsenal, college. But beneath this proclaimed loyalty, rivalries and secrets threatened the unity of this transplanted society.
