Born Moïche Zakharovich Shagalov in Liozna, near Vitebsk, in 1887, Marc Chagall grew up in a modest Hasidic Jewish family. Vitebsk was then a vibrant center of Jewish culture in Belarus, with its synagogues, artisans, and bustling markets. These scenes of daily life, often imbued with folklore and spirituality, would become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his most iconic works, populated by fiddlers on roofs, floating lovers, and fantastic animals.
After art studies in Saint Petersburg and a formative stay in Paris, Chagall returned to Vitebsk in 1914, amidst the turmoil of World War I and the Russian Revolution. There, he founded the Vitebsk Art School, attempting to bridge European avant-garde with his local roots.
