When Toulouse defied the Pope and the King
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Toulouse was the capital of Occitania, home to the powerful Counts who defied the Pope and the King of France. From the largest Romanesque church in the world to the convent housing Thomas Aquinas' relics, the Pink City hides a Cathar heritage that the crusade never managed to erase.
The Counts of Toulouse were among the most powerful lords in Europe. Raymond VI protected the Cathars, tolerated Jews and Muslims, and stood up to Pope Innocent III. This defiance would cost the dynasty its power, its lands, and its culture. But in the pink-brick streets of Toulouse, the Occitan spirit survives — coded in the stones, churches, and Renaissance palaces.

« "We are neither heretics nor believers. We are the men of the South." »— — Attributed to Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse
The House of Toulouse, one of Europe's oldest dynasties, had ruled Languedoc since the 9th century. By the 12th century, the Raymond counts controlled a territory larger than the King of France's, from Toulouse to Provence. Their court was a center of Occitan culture — troubadours, courtly poetry, religious tolerance. The Cathars were protected, Jewish communities thrived.
In 1209, Pope Innocent III launched the Albigensian Crusade against the county. Raymond VI was excommunicated, humiliated, forced to submit. His son Raymond VII continued the fight, but the Treaty of Meaux-Paris in 1229 sealed the South's fate: Languedoc fell under royal control. The Inquisition set up at the Jacobins convent. The Occitan language was banned from official records.
Yet Toulouse would be reborn. In the 15th century, the pastel trade — Toulouse blue — enriched the city. Merchants built the sumptuous townhouses that still line the streets. The Hôtel d'Assézat, a Renaissance masterpiece, testifies to this rediscovered splendor. But in the cellars and crypts, the Cathar memory endures.
