Thomas Pringle — chronicler of forced exile
« We came seeking the promised land. We found thorns, lions, and perpetual war. »— Thomas Pringle, Narrative of a Residence in South Africa (1834)
On March 17, 1820, the first ship carrying British settlers leaves Portsmouth for the Cape. Lord Somerset, the colony's governor, convinced Whitehall to solve two problems at once: rid England of its post-war unemployed and create a white buffer zone between the colony and Xhosa territories. 4,000 men, women and children, recruited from unemployed artisans, are promised fertile lands and a prosperous future.
Reality awaits them at Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth): rocky lands, isolated farms of a few acres, and above all immediate proximity to frontier wars. In 1820-1821, raids and counter-raids multiply. The settlers, supposed to be farmers, reluctantly become soldiers in a conflict they don't understand. Many abandon their plots to regroup in Grahamstown, transforming this military outpost into the Settlers' first urban center. Thomas Pringle, who arrived with the Baviaans River group, documents this disillusionment in his poems and stories, creating the first South African literature in English.
