Rotterdam — The Ashes Conspiracy

Rotterdam begins at the Stadhuis, built between 1914 and 1920 by Henri Evers in Dutch neo-Renaissance style. Its 70-meter tower, adorned with a sculpted dome, dominated Coolsingel when German bombs fell on May 14, 1940. Facing Sint-Laurenskerk stands De Verwoeste Stad, Ossip Zadkine's bronze monument inaugurated May 15, 1954. This 6.5-meter screaming figure, cast in Paris and placed on a travertine base from ruins, embodies the pain of destruction. The biblical inscription from Jeremiah 4:20 still resonates: 'Destruction upon destruction is proclaimed.' Nearby, the 1898 Witte Huis, first Dutch skyscraper at 43 meters, miraculously survives. Sole survivor of the 25 towers in Kop van Zuid district, it was then the tallest building in Western Europe after the Eiffel Tower.
