In the 19th century, the Hungarian Great Plain witnessed a phenomenon unique in Europe: the betyárs, brigands of honor who defied Austrian oppression. These men, often former peasants ruined by Vienna's tax reforms, chose the free life of the puszta over submission. Rózsa Sándor (1813-1878), born in Kecskemét, became their emblematic figure. A former hussar soldier, he formed a band that roamed the region between Debrecen and Szolnok, redistributing part of their spoils to the poor.
The legend of the betyárs quickly transcended reality. They embodied Hungarian resistance against Habsburg domination, particularly after the crushing of the 1848 revolution. Sobri Jóska, Savanyú Jóska, Pap Jancsi: these names resonated in csárdás like hymns to freedom. Their code of honor — protecting the weak, respecting women, defying the powerful — forged a myth that would nourish the national imagination into the 20th century. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you.
