Between 1530 and 1610, Red Bay becomes North America's first industrial complex. Every summer, a flotilla of Basque galleons sails up from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Pasaia and Bermeo to hunt right whales in the Strait of Belle Isle. Three thousand men — sailors, harpooners, coopers, carpenters — transform this isolated fjord into a temporary metropolis where Euskera is spoken and the hymns of Bayonne's Saint Mary Cathedral resonate.
Whale oil was then worth twenty times more than olive oil in the markets of Seville and Antwerp. It lit the palaces of Charles V, lubricated Swiss clockwork mechanisms, waterproofed the sails of the Spanish Armada. But in 1565, an early winter traps the fleet in ice. The San Juan sinks with its cargo — and its technical secrets. Four centuries later, underwater archaeologists excavate intact the world's oldest Basque galleon, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2013.
