Storyville — The Lost Recordings of Jazz's Forbidden District

In the late 19th century, New Orleans was a cosmopolitan port, a true cultural crossroads where African, Creole, European, and American influences converged. It was in this fertile ground that jazz took shape, merging spirituals, ragtime, military marches, and blues. In 1897, the municipality, in an attempt to regulate prostitution and entertainment, created Storyville, a legally designated district for brothels, bars, and dance halls. Ironically, this paradoxical control offered a unique space where Black and Creole musicians could play together, experiment, and develop this new form of musical expression. Figures like Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton forged the first sounds of jazz there, making Storyville an unprecedented musical laboratory.

Storyville's golden age abruptly ended in 1917. With the United States' entry into World War I, the Navy Department ordered the closure of red-light districts near military bases, fearing for the morality and health of the troops. The closure of Storyville had a profound impact: many musicians, deprived of their workplaces, migrated north, particularly to Chicago and New York. This musical diaspora contributed to the rapid spread of jazz across the country, transforming a local phenomenon into a national, then global, musical genre. Storyville's legacy, though the district was later demolished, lies in the impetus it gave to the music that would redefine the 20th century.
