Mestia — Tamar's Forgotten Treasure

🎭Your Mission

You are a royal archivist for Queen Tamar, sent in the year 1195 to document the heritage of Svaneti in Mestia, Georgia.

Your mission begins in Seti Square

Explore Mestia, the historic heart of Upper Svaneti, where medieval towers and Georgian mountain legends converge.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins in Seti Square, Mestia's historic gathering point, surrounded by medieval Svan towers. These typical Upper Svaneti structures are the starting point for many local explorations. It is here, in the heart of the town at 1500 meters above sea level, that clans united to defend their territory. Your first task is to decipher the symbols carved into the stones, a legacy of a time when each tower told a story of protection against invasions, an essential part of Georgian cultural heritage.

Continue to the Mestia Museum of History and Ethnography, founded in 1934 and housing over 4000 Svan artifacts. This key cultural site of the UNESCO Upper Svaneti region showcases the history of Svaneti from the 10th century to the present day, with icons, manuscripts, and ritual objects. Your journey will then take you to the Khergiani Tower, a typical example of 12th-13th century Svan defense towers, approximately 20-25 meters high. These fortresses served as both cattle shelters and human refuges, illustrating the resilience of Mestia's inhabitants.

Your exploration continues to the Saint George Church of Laghami, an 11th-century Svan church. Its architecture, incorporating towers, is emblematic of the UNESCO Upper Svaneti cultural landscape, inscribed in 1994. Inside, medieval frescoes and icons attest to the region's spiritual depth. Immediately after, the Mikheil Khergiani House-Museum, dedicated to the legendary Georgian alpinist (1935-1969), the 'Tiger of the Mountains,' displays his climbing equipment. Khergiani, who climbed over 300 routes, is a local figure connecting Mestia's ancient history to its mountain traditions.

As you pass through the Lanchvali Quarter, you will discover groups of Svan towers dating from the Middle Ages, a typical architectural ensemble of Svaneti. Its narrow streets and traditional fortifications immerse you in medieval life. The Mulkhra River Bridge, a traditional stone structure crossing the Mulkhra River, integrates the network of local trails leading to glaciers like Chalaadi. This bridge, an element of the Svan mountain landscape, is a reminder of the importance of communication routes in this isolated region of Georgia.

Your journey concludes around Hatsvali, after having traversed Mestia's historical sites. The more than 200 Svan towers in Mestia and its surroundings, built between the 10th and 13th centuries, and classified as UNESCO since 1994, will have revealed their secrets. This thematic walking tour will have allowed you to understand the history of Mestia, a true GPS treasure hunt through a unique heritage. You leave with a deep understanding of Svaneti, its traditions, and its landscapes, enriched by this interactive and immersive visit.
