🎭Your Mission

You are an Anzac Legacy Investigator, dedicated to uncovering forgotten truths from the Great War, in present-day Wellington, New Zealand.

Wellington, the ANZAC Myth and the Echo of Gallipoli

« It is a strange thing, this war. It tears us from our home, from all we know, to throw us into hell. But it also binds us in a way nothing else ever can. »
Anonymous ANZAC soldier, 1915

The Sacrifice of Gallipoli and the Birth of an Identity

In 1915, amidst World War I, Allied forces launched the Dardanelles campaign, aiming to capture Constantinople. Among them, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25. For the young nations of Australia and New Zealand, it was their first major engagement in an international conflict. Conditions were appalling: cramped trenches, fierce fighting, and unforgiving terrain. Thousands of soldiers from both sides perished in this eight-month-long bloodbath.

For New Zealand, Gallipoli was a foundational moment. Of the 10,000 New Zealanders deployed, 8,556 were killed or wounded. This heavy human cost, and the bravery shown in the face of adversity, forged a sense of national identity distinct from that of Great Britain. April 25, ANZAC Day, has become the main national commemoration, symbolizing sacrifice, courage, and the birth of a collective consciousness. The military failure transformed into a powerful founding myth, honored annually at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington.
