1755: The Fall of French Acadia
Fort Beauséjour, built in 1751 on the Chignecto Isthmus, represents the last French attempt to maintain a foothold in Acadia after the cession of Nova Scotia to England through the Treaty of Utrecht (1713). This earth and stone fortress, designed by engineer Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry, was meant to protect the border between French and British Acadia.
On June 16, 1755, after fourteen days of siege, commander Louis Du Pont Duchambon de Vergor capitulated to the British forces of Robert Monckton. This defeat immediately triggered the Great Deportation: between 1755 and 1764, nearly 11,500 Acadians were forcibly deported to American colonies, France, or England. A page of three centuries of French history in North America was definitively closed.
